In memory of Geena, Jeanette Del Valle has started a scholarship fund for graduating seniors at the high school Geena graduated from (and where Jeanette teaches).  Students can apply for "The Geena Torres Hodgins Scholarship Award" by writing an essay on how they have personally overcome adversity to pursue their dreams (just as Geena had in her life).  We're looking for the most 'Geena-esque' student. Donations from family and friends of Geena are being accepted by Jeanette in NY.  The graduation ceremony is at Lehman College's Lovinger Theatre on Friday, June 26, 2009 at 6:00 PM.  This will be the third year the scholarship is being awarded.

Burial was held in New York on Friday, September 17, 2004
at the South Salem Cemetery in South Salem, New York.

Excerpt from a New York Newsday article on 9-12-2004:

At Broward County intersection with a malfunctioning traffic signal, Torres-Hodgins, on route to a check on a friend, is killed when a westbound SUV crashes into her stopped car. Perez is seriously injured.  

Excerpt from a Sun-Sentinel news article on 9-7-2004:

A similar situation at Nob Hill Road and Commercial Boulevard in Broward County had deadly results Sunday, officials said.

The intersection's traffic lights were flashing red in all directions when Geena Torres-Hodgins, 33, of Tamarac, heading south on Nob Hill Road, collided with a Chevrolet Suburban westbound on Commercial Boulevard, Broward County Sheriff's officials said.

Torres-Hodgins died at Broward General Medical Center, sheriff's spokeswoman Cheryl Stopnick said. Her passenger, Daniel Perez, 37, was listed in serious condition.

The driver of the Suburban, Alejandro Dominguez, 43, of Parkland, and his passengers were not injured.
